La ciudad está dividida en dos por el río Nervión, a lo largo del cual se extiende un agradable paseo por ambas márgenes. Se ofrecen rutas turísticas en barco hasta la desembocadura del río recordando la historia naval e industrial de Vizcaya. Con su amplia oferta cultural, comercial y gastronómica, en esta ciudad no hay cabida para el aburrimiento. El singular Casco Viejo, completamente peatonal, es el corazón de la ciudad con sus callejuelas salpicadas de bares donde se pueden degustar los más exquisitos pintxos. Aquí no podemos dejar de visitar la catedral de Santiago de estilo gótico, el prestigioso Teatro Amaga, la animada Plaza Nueva, la antigua biblioteca de Bidebarrieta, o el histórico edificio del Mercado de la Ribera en plena reconstrucción. Estructurascreadas por las más destacadas figuras de la arquitectura de vanguardia, como el Museo Guggenheim diseñado por Frank Gehry, el Centro de Ocio y Cultura Alhóndiga diseñado por Philippe Starck, el Palacio de Congresos y de la Música Euskalduna, el Bilbao Exhibition Centre o el Aeropuerto de La Paloma diseñado por Santiago Calatrava, vertebran el nuevo Bilbao. La zona del Ensanche cuenta con las tiendas más amplias y elegantes de la ciudad. En el triángulo formado por la Gran Vía, Marqués del Puerto y Rodríguez Arias, se encuentran las firmas más exclusivas. La diversidad museística es otra de las señas de identidad de la villa.

The city is split in two by the Nervión River, which has pleasant walkways on both sides. There are tourist routes by boat to the mouth of the river, during which the naval and industrial history of Bilbao is explained. With its ample cultural, business and culinary offer, there’s no room for boredom in this city. The unique Casco Viejo, or old quarter, is now totally pedestrian: it is the heart of Bilbao, with narrow streets dotted with bars at which to sample the exquisite pintxos (tapas). Obligatory stops: Santiago cathedral in the Gothic style, the prestigious Teatro Arriaga, the lively Plaza Nueva, the old Bidebarrieta Library, or the historie Mercado de la Ribera building, which is now being restored.

Many buildings were designed by some of the leading figures in vanguard architecture. The new Bilbao contains works such as the Guggenheim Museum by Frank Gehry, the Alhóndiga Centre of Leisure and Culture by Philippe Starck, the Euskalduna Conference and Music Centre, the Bilbao Exhibition Centre and La Paloma airport, the latter the work of Santiago Calatrava. The Ensanche area has the largest and most elegant shops in the city, while in the triangle formed by the Gran Vía, Marqués del Puerto and Rodríguez Arias thoroughfares it is possible to find the most exclusive brands. Another characteristic of the city is its ample offer of museums.

La mayor joya urbana de Vitoria es su casco antiguo, un compendio de palacetes renacentistas y edificios románicos, cercado por una muralla y dos fortalezas, y un agradable espacio para el ocio en la Plaza de la Virgen Blanca. La catedral de Santa María bajo el lema ‘abierto por obras’ invita a conocer los entresijos de su restauración, lo que sirvió de fuente de inspiración al escritor Ken Follet para su obra ‘Un mundo sin fin’, que ha proyectado el nombre de Vitoria en todo el mundo.

Los famosos Arquillos son los encargados de realizar la transición entre el barrio medieval y la parte nueva de Vitoria, donde destaca la Plaza de los Fueros, una de las primeras expansiones de la ciudad hacia el sur. La calle San Prudencio avanza al oeste hacia el parque de La Florida, el preferido por los habitantes de Vitoria para encontrar tranquilidad. En Navidad, aquí se coloca un belén de tamaño natural compuesto por más de 300 figuras.

El ensanche del siglo XIX es la principal zona comercial que transcurre entre calles peatonales, donde destacan el edificio de la Ópera y los bellos miradores de las construcciones de la zona. Ir de compras por Vitoria es una delicia. La calle Eduardo Dato es una de las principales vías comerciales donde residen las grandes marcas, mientras que en el casco antiguo aún existen tiendas familiares donde encontrar objetos especiales.

Vitoria has combined to perfection its role as the political and administrative centre of the Basque autonomous región with its unique style of rich medieval architecture.

The best parts of Vitoria are its old quater, a mix of small Renaissance palaces and Romanesque buildings surrounded by a wall and two fortresses and a pleasant area for leisure in the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca. The Santa María cathedral —now bearing the sign ‘Open for Works’, an invitation to inspect the details of restoration process— was a source of inspiration for British writer Ken Follet for his novel Word Without End, which spread the name of Vitoria all over the world.

The famous Arquillos are two constructions that constituted the transition between the medieval part of Vitoria and the modern part to the south, with its outstanding Plaza do los Fueros. The Calle San Prudencio, La Florida Park, a favourite with residents seeking and quiete Christmas time a life-sjze nativity scene is placed composed of more than 300 figures. The 19th-century Ensanche neighbourhood is the main shopping área, with its pedestrian streets, the Opera building, and the lovety bay windows and enclosed balconies of the buildings. Shopping in Vitoria is a deliight. The Calle Eduardo Dato is one of the principal commercial streets offering important intemalional producís, while in the old part of town there are still family-run business ai witch to find special objects.

SAN SEBASTIAN: exclusividad y esplendor

La bella San Sebastián sigue manteniendo en pie edificios que en los siglos XIX y XX acogían a la burguesía europea, como la torre de la catedral neogótica del Buen Pastor o el Palacio de Miramar, construidos para la reina María Cristina. No obstante, San Sebastián ha sumado nuevas propuestas arquitectónicas como el Kursaal, diseñado por Rafael Moneo, y no se queda atrás de los grandes proyectos. Muestra de ello es el de convertir el antiguo edificio de Tabacalera en un Centro Internacional de Cultura Contemporánea, con la ambición de alcanzar en 2016 la capitalidad cultural.

La playa de La Concha, con la isla de Santa Clara al fondo y presidida por el monte Urgull, ofrece a sus visitantes el placer de atravesar su paseo a ritmo de bicicleta, al estilo de las limpias y silenciosas ciudades del norte de Europa. El Peine del Viento, emplazado en la bahía, es una de las esculturas maestras que Eduardo Chillida dejó en esta ciudad inspirado por el mar. El río Urumea divide la ciudad en dos, y sobre él se tienden algunos de los puentes más hermosos de Euskadi. En laParte Vieja se concentran algunos de los edificios más antiguos, y en los bares que llenan sus estrechas calles peatonales se pueden encontrar los pintxos más elaborados del momento.

El Mercado de La Brecha, hoy en dia situado en el Boulevard, es una de las arterias con mas ajetreo social y comercial de la ciudad. Y muy cerca, en la calle Aldamar, destaca el colorido de los mercados tradicionales de verdura y de productos tipicos vascos.

San Sebastián es también un importante centro de ocio. Destacan el Festival Internacional de Cine, donde se dan cita las más destacadas figuras del mundo cinematográfico, y la Tamborrada que se celebra a principios de año.

SAN SEBASTIAN: exclusive splendour

Lovely San Sebastián still has many of the buildings that in the 19th and 20th centuries were home to the European bourgeoisie, along with the tower of the neo-Gothic cathedral of El Buen Pastor and the Palacio de Miramar, built for queen María Cristina. Nevertheless, San Sebastián has welcomed newer buildings, among them the Kursaal auditorium, designed by Rafael Moneo. There is a project to convert the old Tabacalera building into an International Centre for Contemporary Culture, in a bid to make the city a 2016 European Capital of Culture.

The shore of La Concha Beach, with the Santa Clara island in the centre of the bay and Mount Urgull in the background, is perhaps best traversed by bicycle, in the style of the clean, silent cities of northern Europe.

El Peine del Viento (‘The Comb of the Wind) is a statue on the bay — it was inspired by the sea— that the master Eduardo Chillida left to the city. The Urumea River divides the city in two, and is crossed by some of the most beautiful bridges in Euskadi. The city’s Parte Vieja has some of the oldest buildings, and its bars offer carefully conceived pintxos and tapas.

La Brecha market, today located on the Boulevard, is a bustling commercial and social centre. And close by, on the Calle Aldamar, are the colourful vegetable and traditional Basque handicraft markets. San Sebastián is also an important leisure centre. Its International Film Festival brings together the leading figures from the movie world, while the Tamborrada is a stunning drum and music festival held at the start of each year.

COSTA VASCA: Un mar vivo

La costa vasca se compone de más de 250 kilómetros de playas, donde se dan cita arenales salvajes, islas solitarias, rías de insondable belleza, vertiginosos acantilados y formaciones rocosas únicas en el mundo.

Desde aquellas integradas en el medio urbano, hasta las que tienen un carácter más salvaje, como las Siete Playas de Mutriku o la de Barrika, pasando por espacios naturales más abiertos como los de Bakio, todo el mundo encuentra su playa en Euskadi. La bella playa de Zarautz es uno de los focos más turísticos de la costa vasca. Los acantilados de Zumaia, con su flysch que atrae a geólogos de todo el mundo, o los humedales de Plaiaundi, en Hondarribia, son visitas ineludibles, así como la playa de Laga, que constituye uno de los arenales más bonitos de Vizcaya.

Cerca de la desembocadura de la ría de Urdaibai, un bello espacio natural declarado Reserva de la Biosfera, está San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, una isla coronada por una ermita y unida a la tierra por un pasillo escalonado. En Getaria destaca el islote de San Antón, conocido por su singular forma de ratón, y la coqueta Hondarribia, cerca de la frontera francesa, que posee uno de los barrios marineros más castizos de Euskadi.

A los pueblos pesqueros que todavía cuentan con economías ligadas al mundo marino, como Bermeo, Ondarroa o Getaria, se suma la creación de modernos puertos deportivos en Hondarribia, Orio o Getxo, que constituyen un nuevo campo de ocio.

The Basque coast: a living sea

The Basque coast is more than 250 kilómetros long, and full of wild beaches, solitary islands, beautiful estuaries, steep cliffs and rocky formations that are unique in the world.

There’s a beach for everyone in Euskadi, from thoses that are integrated into a village, to those of a wilder nature like the Seven Beaches of Mutriku or the one at Barrika, to the more open natural áreas at Bakio. The beautiful beach at Zarautz is one of the most
popular tourist attractions on the Basque coast. The cliffs at Zumaia, with their flysch —a sequence of sedimentary rocks— attract geologists from all over the world, while the Plaiaundi wetlands, in Hondarribia, are an obligatory visit, as is the beach at Laga, one of the prettiest in Vizcaya province. Near the mouth of the Urdaibai estuary, a beautiful natural área that has been declared a Biosphere Reserve, is San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, an island crowned by a hermitage and linked to the mainland by steps. One of the attractions of Getaria is the San Antón islet, famous for its shape like a mouse, while charming Hondarribia, near the French border, has one of the most typical seaport neighbourhoods in Euskadi.

Besides the fishing villages like Bermeo, Ondarroa or Getaria, there are modern yachting ports such as those in Hondarribia, Orio or Getxo, which offer new leisure opportunities.

Naturaleza: eterno verde

LOS QUE VENGAN A EUSKADI ATRAÍDOS POR SU NATURALEZAY ENTORNO RURAL, TAMPOCO SE VERÁN DEFRAUDADOS POR SU PAISAJE, CON SUS CASERÍOS IMPONENTES, LOS MERCADOS TRADICIONALES Y LA EVOLUCIÓN DE UNAS TAREAS CAMPESINAS HISTÓRICAS.

Algunos de los monumentos religiosos más importantes de Euskadi se encuentran en estos valles, como la ermita de La Antigua, en Zumárraga, construida en tiempos románicos, o el santuario de Nuestra Señora de Arantzazu, en el que participaron Eduardo Chillida y Jorge Oteiza. En Azpeitia, se levanta la basílica de San Ignacio de Loyola, un conjunto barroco único, y el santuario de Urkiola a las faldas del parque natural con el mismo nombre.

El mundo rural y la etnografía van, a menudo, de la mano. Muestra de ello son las ferrerías de Agorregi en Gipuzkoa o el museo de la Alfarería Vasca de Elosu, en Álava, o caseríos recuperados que explican al visitante la rutina rural de antaño.

Para dar cabida a la demanda de este tipo de turismo, Euskadi cuenta con una amplia red de alojamientos rurales perfectamente integrados en el entorno.

Abundan los espacios naturales, ideales para practicar actividades recreativas como senderismo, trekking o montañismo en parajes naturales como el Aizkorri o el Gorbea.

La localidad de Kortezubi destaca por la belleza del Bosque de Orna, pintado por Agustín Ibarrola, y las cuevas de Santímamiñe, con restos y pinturas rupestres.

Nature:eternally green

PEOPLE COMING TO EUSKADI FOR ITS NATURE AND THE RURAL SETTING WON’T BE DISAPPOINTED: THERE ARE IMPOSING FARM HOUSES, TRADITIONAL MARKETS AND LONG FARMING TRADITIONS.

Some of Euskadi’s most important religious monuments are found in these valleys, such as the Romanesque La Antigua hermitage, in Zumárraga, or the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Arantzazu, in which contemporary artists Eduardo Chillida and Jorge Oteiza took part. Azpeitia boasts the basílica of San Ignacio de Loyola, a uníque group of buildings, while the Urkiola Sanctuary is in the shadow of the natural park of the same name.

This rural world and ethnography often go hand in hand. Some good examples are the iron works at Agorregi in Guipúzcoa or the Museum of Basque Pottery in Elosu, in Álava, or old farmhouses (caseríos) that have been restored and in witch visitors can learn about rural routines of old.

To satisfy the demand for this kind of tourism, Euskadi has an ampie network of rural lodgings that are perfectly integrated into their surroundings.

There are many open spaces ideal for hiking, trekking or mountain climbing in the Aizkorri and Gorbea areas.

The town of Kortezubi is outstanding for the beauty of the Bosque de Orna, a forest where some of the trees have been painted by Agustín Ibarrola, and the Santímamiñe caves, with their prehistoric paintings.
